What actually happens in your nervous system during a Reiki session
The first time someone receives Reiki, two questions usually come up. The first is what they should be feeling. The second is whether anything is actually happening. I want to talk about the second one, because the answer has more to it than you might expect.
Your body has two modes
Your autonomic nervous system runs almost everything you don't have to think about. Your heartbeat. Your breath. Digestion. Hormones. Whether your immune system is paying attention. Whether your shoulders are creeping up toward your ears.
It runs on two branches. The sympathetic branch handles alertness, vigilance, and the work of being a person in the world. The parasympathetic branch handles rest, repair, and digestion. They're meant to trade off. When something stressful happens, the sympathetic side ramps up. When the threat passes, the parasympathetic side takes over and the body restores itself.
That's the theory. In practice, most of us, by the time we book a session, are stuck somewhere in the sympathetic gear. We've been there so long we've stopped noticing. We feel tired all the time. We don't sleep well. We get sick more often than we used to. Our jaw hurts. Our digestion is off. Small things make us cry.
The body wants to come down. It just needs permission. And it needs the conditions to feel safe enough to take it.
What Reiki actually does to the body
When you lie down for a session, several things shift, and you don't have to believe in any of it for them to happen.
Your breath slows. This alone changes everything downstream. Slower breath signals the brainstem that the threat has passed. Heart rate variability improves, which is the body's way of saying it has the bandwidth to be flexible again. Vagal tone, the strength of the signaling on your tenth cranial nerve, improves with sustained calm states. Cortisol drops. Inflammatory markers settle. Sleep architecture begins to repair itself, sometimes that same night.
None of this is magic. It's what happens to any nervous system when it's given a long, quiet hour in a safe room with someone present and attentive. Reiki is partly a context. The hands, the still room, the unhurried pace, and the practitioner's settled presence are all part of what's working.
The body is not just mechanical. It is electrical, neurological, and quietly waiting for permission to rest.
The biofield piece
There's also a layer of this that traditions across the world have recognized for thousands of years and that contemporary science is only beginning to measure. The body has an electromagnetic field. It's measurable, faint, and surrounds the physical body. Practitioners trained in Reiki and biofield tuning learn to work in that field, sensing where it feels disorganized, dense, or empty.
I'm not asking you to take a position on what energy is. I'm telling you that something is happening that the people receiving it consistently describe in similar terms. Warmth in specific places. A feeling of release in the chest or belly. The sense of something they didn't know they were carrying finally being put down. After a thousand sessions, those reports stop sounding like coincidence and start sounding like data.
What people notice in the days after
The session itself is one thing. What happens in the 24 to 72 hours after is often where the real shift shows up. People sleep differently. Sometimes deeper, sometimes more dreams, sometimes a long-overdue cry. Old emotions surface and then settle. Pain that's been there for months changes character. Decisions that felt impossible become clearer.
I tell every client the same thing afterward. Drink water. Move gently. Don't make any big decisions for a day or two. Pay attention to what comes up. The work continues after you leave.
You don't have to believe in anything
If you've never tried Reiki, here is what I want you to know. You don't have to come in already convinced. You don't have to identify as spiritual. You don't have to know what to expect. You don't even have to feel anything during the session itself. The work happens at the level of the nervous system whether you notice it or not.
What you do have to do is lie down and let it happen. And maybe, afterward, notice what's different.
